Coal Extraction / Preparation / Handling
Common to all aspects of coal mining—preparation, handling and transportation—is the effect the coal has upon the materials that move or process it. In addition to being moisture laden and carrying highly corrosive elements such as chlorine and sulfur, coal is extremely abrasive, even in low-stress handling situations. For operations to remain competitive, the cost of producing energy from coal has to be carefully managed. The cost of corrosion and wear on capital plant and equipment is an obvious problem area, causing expensive replacement, maintenance and lost production. Materials such as carbon steels galvanized mild steel and aluminum are often insufficient when the task is so demanding. Utility stainless steel has proven itself as an all-round solution in a wide range of coal handling and rail transport operations.
